Technical Insights: Marine Air Compressors
Expert engineering observations from our dismantling facility.
What Is A Marine Air Compressor?
A marine air compressor is a heavy-duty pneumatic machine used to generate high-pressure compressed air. They are typically multi-stage reciprocating (piston) compressors. The primary function onboard is filling the main air receivers with 30-bar compressed air, which is strictly required to pneumatically start the vessel's main propulsion diesel engines and auxiliary generator sets. We supply leading brands including Tanabe, Sperre, Yanmar, and Hatlapa.
Applications
On a commercial vessel, air compressors are divided by pressure duty. Main starting air compressors (25-30 bar) are critical for engine starting and maneuvering operations. Control air or working air compressors (usually 7-8 bar) operate pneumatically actuated valves, control systems, and pneumatic power tools on deck and in the engine room. Emergency air compressors (usually diesel-driven or hand-cranked) are vital for black-start conditions when the vessel has lost all electrical power. Common Failure Modes
In our experience, the most common failures are related to the concentric suction and delivery valves. Carbonization of lube oil on the valve plates, caused by excessive discharge temperatures or poor cooling, prevents the valves from seating properly. This leads to inter-stage air leakage, reduced volumetric efficiency, and prolonged filling times. Additionally, wear on the high-pressure (HP) piston rings leads to blow-by into the crankcase, causing lube oil degradation and excessive oil consumption.
Inspection Process
We strip down salvaged compressors to the bare crankcase. The crankshaft is measured for journal wear and straightness. Cylinders are honed and checked for ovality. All HP and LP (low-pressure) valves are overhauled with new plates and springs. Following assembly, components undergo comprehensive NDT inspections. Finally, the compressor is test-run to confirm it can charge an air receiver to 30 bar within the manufacturer's specified time frame, while monitoring inter-stage pressures and cooling water temperatures.
Buyer Considerations
When purchasing a replacement compressor block, ensure the Free Air Delivery (FAD) capacity (m³/h) matches your vessel's classification requirements for air receiver filling time. If you are replacing the entire skid, verify the electric motor voltage and frequency (e.g., 440V/60Hz). Always ask the supplier to confirm that the inter-coolers and after-coolers have been hydraulically pressure-tested, as internal tube leaks will allow water to ingress into the high-pressure air system, severely damaging the main engine air start valves.
Air Compressors — Common Questions
Answers to specific questions our clients ask about sourcing marine air compressors.
What are the most reliable marine starting air compressor brands supplied from ship recycling yards?
+
Based on historical longevity and availability of spare parts, Japanese manufacturers like Tanabe (H-type, V-type), Yanmar, and Matsubara, alongside European brands like Sperre and Hatlapa, are considered highly reliable. These units are frequently salvaged, thoroughly overhauled, and tested at our facility.
How is the Free Air Delivery (FAD) capacity of a marine air compressor tested and verified?
+
FAD capacity is verified by running the reconditioned compressor to charge a known-volume air receiver up to the maximum working pressure (typically 30 bar). The time taken is measured against the original manufacturer's specifications to ensure volumetric efficiency is fully restored.
What are the critical inspection points during the overhaul of a multi-stage marine air compressor?
+
Critical inspections include micro-metric measurement of crankshaft journals, checking cylinder ovality, and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) of the crankcase. Additionally, the concentric suction and delivery valves are overhauled, and inter-coolers are pressure-tested for internal tube leaks.
Can a used marine air compressor be certified by IACS classification societies before installation?
+
Yes. Upon request, reconditioned marine air compressors can be surveyed and certified by major IACS members (such as DNV, ABS, or Lloyd's Register) at our testing facility prior to global dispatch, ensuring full compliance with your vessel's classification requirements.
